Ongeri calls for more protection of Kenyan boychild

NAIROBI, - Education Minister Prof Sam Ongeri has once more reiterated the need to protect the boy-child in Central Province.
The Minister who spoke at Forum for African Women Educationists - FAWE conference at the Windsor Hotel in Nairobi Thursday said the drop-out rate of boys in Central province is alarming and worrying.
"Whereas more girls in the other provinces drop out leaving the boys to continue their education, the situation is the reverse in Central Province, and I will urged FAWE to help the Ministry of education to unravel this puzzle, where is the boy-child dropping out to?" posed Ongeri.
He appealed to FAWE to help formulate ways of ensuring gender parity of both boys and girls in the schools on the continent.
The Minister said the reversal in the boy-child attendance in school coupled by the current insistence on gender parity that is in favor of the girl-child could further marginalize the boy-child.
"In my ministry most of the sector heads, and heads of various departments are women, and now the men in the Ministry are asking, what about us," queried the Minister.
Ongeri at the same time urged FAWE to help the education sector on the continent to be more accommodative of children who are living with HIV within the school system.
"I hope you saw me with a young girl at the Mombasa conference, who is HIV infected, and she told me that some of the girls tell the boys not to talk to her because she is HIV positive, I will urged you as FAWE to talk to the girls so that they are not the ones who again enhance the stigma among those of their kind who are infected with HIV."
Ongeri said the current drought affecting the horn of Africa countries is a major set-back in the Horn of Africa countries' efforts of increasing school enrollment and retention.
The Minister said most of the girls are dropping out of school to either fend for their elderly parents or younger siblings hence forego learning.
