Freed Prisoners Blamed for Rising Crime in Embu

Police in Embu have arrested four suspected thugs, including a former convict who recently released from Embu prison. Embu deputy police boss Edward Wafula said the suspected were arrested by plain clothes police.
Wafula said the former convict is suspected to have been involved in the murder of a watchman at the Jua Kali shed in Dallas Estate. Wafula said the other three were arrested after a spate of burglaries at Kamiu village in the municipality. Stolen phones were recovered from them.

Wafula said following the release of 118 prisoners about a week ago from the Embu prison, a wave of crime especially in Dalllas Estate has surged adding tha some of the released prisoners could be involved. At the weeked, political leaders led by Manyatta MP Emilio Kathuri, raised concern over a rise of crime in the area blaming some of the incidents on the just released prisoners from the Embu and Kerugoya prisons.
Kathuri, Embu Mayor Peter Muriithi, his deputy Nelson Rintari and Itabua Councillor James Wainaina, and Deputy police boss Edward Wafula said thuggery has gone up in the last week in Dallas Estate. Titus Mbithi, a watchman at the estate was murdered, and another watchman hospitalised. The political leaders were speaking at Muthatari village in Itabua location during election for leaders of the Itabua water project while Wafula was speaking to the Star in his office. " I am disturbed by the rise in crime in this region. People have been killed, mugged, and robbed," the MP said.

He asked the police to beef up the security in the area and further blaming some of the police officers of not doing their job as required as some criminals implicated in crime were arrested and then released before being taken to court under mysterious circumstances. He said a young man in Itabua area was attacked by a person that he identified positively and was arrested but later released. "I wonder whether these police want the people to take the law into their hands or what they want. They should protect us and our properties as they are required," He said. He asked the residents not to hide criminals no matter whether they are relatives arguing that if criminals are hidden they will be very detrimental to the society and the families hiding them.
